Microphones 01
Introduction

Level of challenge Easy

Welcome to this introduction to our video tutorials on microphones.

Despite the proliferation of electronic sound sources and sample libraries, microphones still play a central role in sound recording. Even if we are only ever recording vocals, we still need a comprehensive understanding of microphone technologies and their uses to achieve the best results.

Each tutorial video in this series covers one aspect of microphone technologies, building towards a complete picture of the subject. You can watch them in any order, but they have been ordered in a playlist so that each video builds on the knowledge of the previous one.

Caption - What's the required level of knowledge?

The level of knowledge was determined by asking “what does the average project or home studio owner need to know to effectively choose and use a microphone”. So if you are an electronics engineer, you may find the theory and language too general for your needs.

During these tutorials you will learn about ..

  • the primary microphone types and their characteristics, including dynamic, capacitor and ribbon microphones
  • features such as form factor, controls and power supplies
  • polar patterns
  • phantom power

  • and interconnection
